Counting the Omer 2021 - Day Forty

Day Forty

2nd of Sivan 5781 – from sundown on May 12th to sundown on May 13th, 2021

Begin by reciting the blessing:

ברוך אתה יהוה אלוהינו , מלך העולם , אשר קדשנו במצותי
וציונו עלי לספירת העומר
Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha'Olam asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav
v'tizivanu al sefirat ha'omer.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with your commandments and commanded us to count the omer.

Recite the day of the count:
היום ארבעים יום שהם חמשה שבועות וחמשה ימים לעמר
Hayom arba'im yom, sh'hem chamishah shavuot v'chamishah yamim la'omer.
Today is the fortieth day, making five weeks and five days of the Omer.

Psalm 67: (Jubilee Bible 2000)
God be merciful unto us and bless us and cause his face to shine upon us. Selah. That thy way may be known upon the earth, thy saving health among all the Gentiles.  Let the peoples praise thee, O God; let all the peoples praise thee. O let the Gentiles be glad and sing for joy, for thou shalt judge the people righteously and shepherd the Gentiles upon the earth. Selah. Let the peoples praise thee, O God; let all the peoples praise thee. Then shall the earth bring forth her fruit, and God, even our own God, shall bless us. God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.
Psalm 100: (NKJV)
A Psalm of Thanksgiving. Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

Prayer for day 40:
Heavenly Father, we humbly ask that You preserve and protect Your people who are called by your holy Name. Forgive us, shine your face on us and heal our land that has been defiled by the shedding of innocent blood. Sovereign of the universe, You have commanded us through Moses Your servant to count the days of the omer, in order to purify and cleanse us. Therefore, may it be Your will, Lord our God and God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that in the counting of the omer which I (we) have counted today, I (we) may be purified and sanctified. And through my (our) obedience to your commandments, may Your abundant bounty be granted all the world. May it rectify our soul and our spirit from every impurity and evil intent, and may it purify and sanctify us with all your holiness.
Abba, father, on this, the fortieth day of the counting of the omer, we remember how during the battle with the Amalekites, Moses had to keep his hands lifted up, so that the Israelites prevailed in battle and defeated the Amalekites. And we remember how Yeshua, claiming all authority in Heaven and on Earth, commanded his followers to go and make disciples among all nations and then promising He would be with them always, He ascended into heaven. We humbly ask that You in the same way, help our leaders to keep their arms and their gaze held toward heaven and that we will be strengthened and given all necessary courage and support to carry out Yeshua’s commission to make disciples of all nations today in our time. Amen.
After the reciting the prayer, continue to pray and meditate on how Joshua leads the battle but Moses, hands lifted up, ensures the victory and how on the 40th day after His resurrection, Yeshua ascended into heaven with hands outstretched, sealing the victory over all the forces of darkness in this world and the next.

The Sefirot for day forty is: Hod of Yesod: Humility (gratitude) in Bonding. Humility, not arrogance is needed to form bonds with others by allowing us to forget our own needs and desires and appreciate the worth and well being of others. Gratitude for all God has done in our lives makes it possible to create a bond with another that is cemented by our love for Him and His sublime creation.

Suggested activity for today: Pray for the ability to overcome differences that prevent you from bonding with another person and then thank God for helping you form the bonds you enjoy with others.

Suggested reading from the weekly Torah portion: BaMidbar – 5th reading: Numbers 3:14-39
Suggested reading from the Brit Hadashah: Matt 5:15.
