Counting the Omer 2021 - Day Thirty-one

Day Thirty-one

22nd of Iyyar 5781 – from sundown on May 3rd to sundown on May 4th, 2021

Begin by reciting the blessing:

ברוך אתה יהוה אלוהינו , מלך העולם , אשר קדשנו במצותי
וציונו עלי לספירת העומר
Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha'Olam asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav
v'tizivanu al sefirat ha'omer.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with your commandments and commanded us to count the omer.

Recite the day of the count:
היום אחד ושלשים יום שהם ארבעה שבועות ושלשה ימים לעמר
Hayom echad u-shloshim yom, sh'hem arba'ah shavuot u-shloshah yamim la'omer.
Today is the thirty-first day, making four weeks and three days of the Omer.

Psalm 67:  (Hebrew Names Version)
May God be merciful to us, bless us,
And cause his face to shine on us.           Selah.
That your way may be known on eretz,
And your yeshu`ah among all nations,
Let the peoples praise you, God.
Let all the peoples praise you.

Oh let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
For you will judge the peoples with equity,
And govern the nations on eretz.              Selah.

Let the peoples praise you, God.
Let all the peoples praise you.
The eretz has yielded its increase.
God, even our own God, will bless us.
God will bless us. All the ends of the eretz shall fear him.

Psalm 87: (NKJV)

A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A Song. His foundation is in the holy mountains. The Lord loves the gates of Zion More than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God!  Selah   "I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to those who know Me; Behold, O Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia: 'This one was born there.' " And of Zion it will be said, "This one and that one were born in her; And the Most High Himself shall establish her." The Lord will record, When He registers the peoples: "This one was born there."       Selah

Both the singers and the players on instruments say, "All my springs are in you."

Prayer for day 31:
Avinu Shebbah Shamayim - Our Heavenly Father, we humbly ask that You preserve and protect Your people who are called by your holy Name. Forgive us, shine your face on us and heal our land that has been defiled by the shedding of innocent blood. Sovereign of the universe, You have commanded us through Moses Your servant to count the days of the omer, in order to purify and cleanse us. Therefore, may it be Your will, Lord our God and God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that in the counting of the omer which I (we) have counted today, I (we) may be purified and sanctified. And through my (our) obedience to your commandments, may Your abundant bounty be granted all the world. May it rectify our soul and our spirit from every impurity and evil intent, and may it purify and sanctify us with all your holiness.
Abba, father, on this, the thirty-first day of the counting of the omer, we remember how, when the children of Israel grumbled for something to eat and You provided Manna, how they were instructed to gather only one Omer per person each day and that they were not to keep any until the following day and how some of the people stubbornly gathered more than they were supposed to or tried to keep it till the next day. We humbly ask that You are patient with us when we fail to follow your instructions for our lives and that you help us to learn to hear and follow your instructions. Amen.
After the reciting the prayer, continue to pray and meditate on how the Israelites were ungrateful and often failed to trust in God's promises and stubbornly resisted His instructions with unfortunate results.

The Sefirot for Day thirty-one is: Tiferet of Hod, Beauty (compassion) in Humility (Gratitude). Humility can often enhance our compassion for others and being compassionate can remind us to be humble – remembering the oft repeated warning – “there, but by the grace of God, go I!”

Suggested activity for today: Perform some act of kindness or compassion anonymously so that no one is aware that you were the one responsible.

Suggested reading from the weekly Torah portion: Behar/Bechukotai – 3rd reading: Lev 25:29-38
Other suggested readingDeu 15:7-11; 23:19-20; 24:14-15; Neh 5:9-11
