Counting the Omer 2021 - Day Seventeen

Day Seventeen

8th of Iyyar 5781 – from sundown on April 19th to sundown on April 20th, 2021

Begin by reciting the blessing:
ברוך אתה יהוה אלוהינו , מלך העולם , אשר קדשנו במצותי
וציונו עלי לספירת העומר
Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha'Olam asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav
v'tizivanu al sefirat ha'omer.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with your commandments and commanded us to count the omer.
Recite the day of the count:
היום שבעה-עשר יום שהם שני שבועות ושלשה ימים לעמר
Hayom shivah-asar yom, sh'hem shnei shavuot ushloshah yamim la'omer.
Today is the seventeenth day, making two weeks and three days of the Omer.

Psalm 67: 4-7 (NKJV 49 word Paraphrase)
Let the peoples praise You, God; For You shall judge the people righteously, And govern all the nations on earth. Let everyone praise You, God; Let all people praise You.  Then the earth shall yield her increase; God, shall bless us, And all the earth shall fear Him.
Psalm 119:129-144    פ    Peh    |    צ   Tzaddi
Your testimonies are wonderful; Therefore my soul keeps them. The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. I opened my mouth and panted, For I longed for Your commandments. Look upon me and be merciful to me, As Your custom is toward those who love Your name. Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me. Redeem me from the oppression of man, That I may keep Your precepts. Make Your face shine upon Your servant, And teach me Your statutes. Rivers of water run down from my eyes, Because men do not keep Your law. Righteous are You, O Lord, And upright are Your judgments. Your testimonies, which You have commanded, Are righteous and very faithful. My zeal has consumed me, Because my enemies have forgotten Your words. Your word is very pure; Therefore Your servant loves it. I am small and despised, Yet I do not forget Your precepts. Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth. Trouble and anguish have overtaken me, Yet Your commandments are my delights. The righteousness of Your testimonies is everlasting; Give me understanding, and I shall live.
Prayer for Day 17:
Heavenly Father, we humbly ask that You preserve and protect Your people who are called by your holy Name. Forgive us, shine your face on us and heal our land that has been defiled by the shedding of innocent blood. Sovereign of the universe, You have commanded us through Moses Your servant to count the days of the omer, in order to purify and cleanse us. Therefore, may it be Your will, Lord our God and God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that in the counting of the omer which I (we) have counted today, I (we) may be purified and sanctified. And through my (our) obedience to your commandments, may Your abundant bounty be granted all the world. May it rectify our soul and our spirit from every impurity and evil intent, and may it purify and sanctify us with all your holiness.
Abba, father, on this, the seventeenth day of the counting of the omer, we remember your bountiful kindnesses to your children, how you delivered them from their enslavement in Egypt, and then brought them safely to Elim. And we remember how later, you raised Yeshua Ha Mashiach, from the claws of death and how He, being the firstborn from the dead and given a glorified body, met with the apostles by the Sea of Tiberius, and performed the miracle of the great catch of fish, and how He began to prepare them to declare the Good News of His great compassion and redeeming work to all the World. We humbly ask that You refine us and in every way necessary make us worthy to continue this great work today in our time. Amen.
After the reciting the prayer, continue to pray and meditate on the restoration of Simon Peter and that you may be able to realize your full potential and God's amazing plan for your life.

The Sefirot for Day seventeen is: Tiferet of Tiferet:  Beauty of Beauty. Remembering that the sages equate the concept of Tiferet (beauty) with compassion expressed, we can begin to comprehend the concept of our sacrificial acts of compassion being “a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.” [Philippians 4:18]

Suggested activity for today: Contemplate what it looks like to live a life set-apart for heavenly service as Paul directed in Romans 12:1 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

Suggested reading from the weekly Torah portion: Acharei Mot/Kedoshim – 3rd reading: Leviticus 17:8-18:21; Suggested reading from the Brit HadashahRom 9:30-10:13; Gal 3:10-14; 1 Tim 2:9-10; Eze 22:1-19; 1Cor 5:1-13; 2Cor 6:11-18
